This will be the first of several posts about one of my larger and more exciting projects. I'm building a workshop above my garage and the first step is demolishing the existing garage ceiling. The two-story house has the garage dropped down into the basement level, leaving a large attic room above it which is perfect for this. The headroom in the existing attic room is around 6' 2'", and using a steel beam to bisect the span and allow smaller joists, I will be able to get over 7' of headroom in the new shop. I had an engineer size the beam and give me some stamped structural drawings, and then I did all of the architectural drawings to take to the city to get a permit. After the permit finally came in, I located a steel fabricator to supply the beam, which should be ready next week, so it is time to get started with the demo.
First step was to rip up the existing non-compliant decking from the ceiling joists
Brought down some more drywall to expose the structure, which you can see shored up temporarily
Cutting through the two double 2x12 beams that carry the floor above, but I've got it shored up well enough
Then I just pulled all the nails and removed a few joists to make room for the beam
Up next: Preparing for and Setting the Beam
