Workshop: Welding a New Column Base

The column base that I fabricated before was wide enough that it was going to separate the garage door rails more than I wanted, so I decided to make a new one.  Luckily I had enough half-inch plate around, so I set off on the tedious task of grinding off the old base without destroying the column.

A cutoff wheel can make fairly nice cuts in 1/2" plate if you are patient enough:

I laid out all the positions on the new plate, which is 6 1/2" wide:

I bored 9/16" holes for the bolts over on the drill press and now the base is ready to be welded to the column:

With the last weld bead laid down, the new column is built:

This mild steel cleaned up nicely after a good sanding and is ready for some primer:
