Scott's Blog: Secret Trip: Day 1

For our second anniversary, I planned a surprise trip for Amy and kept the destination a secret. The first challenge was to get everything that she would need packed without revealing any clues. I was pretty sure that I knew what she would need for this trip, but I had her make contingent lists for all the different kinds of trips that she could think of, and then let her lay out everything that she thought she might want and I hauled it all into the guest bedroom and downselected to what she would need.

After being driven to the airport, Amy's first real clue was a boarding pass to Atlanta, a connecting airport that I intentionally chose as an ambiguous layover. We spent that first flight leg looking at the map of available routes in the airline magazine and Amy tried to narrow down where our connection would take us. We established that it was somewhere we haven't been, there were no mountains, the country has sand, and it was in Columbus' "new world". When we got to the Atlanta airport, I told Amy our connecting gate number and she got to lead the way there and read the destination on the marquee above the gate desk.

When we got to Nassau, we caught a cab that took us to our B&B:

We got checked in and asked for a recommendation for somewhere to grab some dinner. The suggestion was a touristy resort restaurant, but on our way there we happened on ramshackle sort of food stand called the Jerk Grill that catered more to locals than tourists and we decided to roll the dice there. We got to chat with the cook and her friend in the kitchen and watch her prepare our fried chicken and hand-cut french fries. We brought our dinner back to the B&B to mix some drinks at the honor bar and enjoy our meal on the veranda.
